Ten years ago, a black woman behind the wheel of a vehicle was unthinkable. While apartheid laws did not prevent these women from driving, politics, economics, and cultural traditions were obstacles to them taking to the streets. Things have changed in South Africa. The film follows three black women drivers: Elizabeth, aged 43, is a learner; Miriam, a veteran taxi driver of twenty years; and Portia, just sixteen, is a skilled go-karter, a symbol of a new attitude—her fearless driving skills starkly contrast Elizabeth’s wheel-gripping nervousness. The film explores all that driving is about: independence, power, status, a job, a means of getting around, danger, and violence. It is a funny film with loud boisterous characters.
