Banned in India—this film is pertinent in the light of current events. “Nuclear nationalism was in the air. The memory of one who had opposed the bomb on moral grounds alone had begun to fade”. So begins Patwardhan’s terrifying account of the nuclear arms race between Pakistan and India. Juxtaposing footage of politicians whipping up public hysteria and interviews with ordinary Indians and Pakistanis, many of whom find their leaders’ bellicose posturing unfathomable, he demonstrates how religious symbols have been hijacked and the legacy of Gandhi betrayed in the service of greed and power. A committed peace activist, Patwardhan sees the friendships and goodwill he has witnessed between Pakistanis and Indians as the only antidote to the seeming insanity of their political elites—“the silver lining in the mushroom cloud”.
